The Hornets on Wednesday claimed guard Alex Garcia off waivers from the San Antonio Spurs.
Garcia, a 6 feet 3-inch Brazilian national, played in two games for the Spurs last season as a rookie, averaging 1.5 points and one steal in 6.5 minutes.
Garcia missed the first 33 games of 2003-2004 while on the injured list with a fractured bone in his left foot.
He injury occurred during a preseason game against the Hornets.
Garcia was activated Jan. 5, but by Jan. 9 was back on the injured list and missed the final 47 games of the season.
Garcia was listed as having a right knee contusion, but his placement on the injured list also coincided with the Spurs' acquisition of Charlie Ward.
Before joining the Spurs, Garcia averaged 17.9 points, four rebounds and four assists for Ribeirao Presto in Brazil's Paulista League in 2002-2003 and was named to the All-Brazilian League First Team.
